Coffee Break with EdOne

Involved with music at a very young age, EdOne has already proven to the world what he’s capable of creating with his unique and very melodic style. Fairly established on the scene with releases on labels such as Bedrock, TAU and Innervisions just to name a few, he’s also created his own imprint this year called ‘Surrealism’ with the goal to expand his name as a brand, that doesn’t only focus on music but also on creating its own and exclusive designs with major influence by the artistic movement surrealism, hence the name. Recently Eduardo has also released an EP on John Digweed’s label, so we saw it as an opportunity to catch up with the Spanish artist and digging a little deeper into its creation as well as getting to know him a little bit better.

Hey Eduardo, thanks for taking a little of your precious time for a coffee break. We saw that you’ve been in Mexico a couple days ago, how was it?

Hey! Many thanks for the invitation, it´s a pleasure to talk with Melodic Diggers Team. Yes, I was in Mexico touring, It was amazing, Mexico is one of my favourite countries, the people, cities, food and of course the parties are one of best in the world, can´t wait to be back.

Digging a little deeper into your musical career, it all started back in 2013 with ‘Live for The Pump’ on VIVa MUSiC. How was Eduardo back then in terms of its musical background and what were your main influences at the time of your debut?

At that time I was quite influenced by break rhythms, after several trips to Ibiza I began to produce House and Tech House music and I was lucky enough to release my first track on the mythical VIVa MUSiC, since then my music has evolved a lot but some influences remain.

Following that year, we’ve seen you leaving tech house and aiming your identity towards a more melodic stuff, with releases on Stil Vor Talent, Innervisions and Bedrock just to name a few. What has made you change that initial approach?

Over time the Tech House scene evolved in a way that I did not like too much, I am a music lover and I discovered other styles that I fell in love with and after years of evolution and growth I finally felt comfortable and happy producing melodic, I think it is a style in which that you can innovate and be very creative.

On a more personal note, could you say that your accident back in 2014 and its recovery had impact on your goals as an artist and that’s why you’ve decided to pursue a solo career?

Of course, the accident helped me to value life much more, to pursue my dreams and never give up, during the recovery time I had the opportunity to dedicate hours and hours to music production. I started the solo career looking for other goals and ambitions.

There’s a question that I also need to ask. What’s the story behind ‘Dissection’ and how did you get it released on Innervisions?

I remember that I had been completely uninspired for about two months, dedicating hours to production and nothing that I liked came out. I was working with the groove of the track for weeks, trying different melodies until the main melody came out and I saw that I had something that could work. I sent the track to Dixon who had already played some of my songs in the past, and the following weekend I saw videos of him playing it in the USA, but it wasn't until months later when they told me they wanted to sign it, the wait was over.

This year you’ve created your own imprint, Surrealism. Could you tell us a bit about the idea behind its creation?

I am in love with art, painting, music, architecture, I thought that combining painting with music would be a good idea. Together with my partner Pakk, we decided to focus on surrealist art, it is an artistic trend that we like a lot and that we admire for that reason, we will take special care in graphic design and everything that surrounds its image.

Nowadays, what are your inspirations and your biggest goals for a near future?

Well ... after a difficult year due to the pandemic and different personal problems I had, it has been difficult for me to always stay inspired, also I always try to find inspiration and motivation anywhere, from walking on the beach, doing sports or a simple meal with friends; they can help you to have positive thinking and help it. To continue publishing in top-level record companies such as Innervisions or Bedrock, to continue traveling the world thanks to my music, in addition to mounting the first showcase of my record company and that the brand continues to grow are the greatest goals right now.

Recently you’ve released an EP on John Digweed’s label, Bedrock Records, called ‘Uncontrolled Thoughts’ and since it’s not your debut at it, it’s safe to assume that you’ve a good relationship with the label. Could you tell us how did that connection started?

I have been in contact with their label manager for years, also a colleague put me in contact with John Digweed and I sent him some songs, since then I usually send them everything I do, they are very professional and communication with them is very easy, the truth is that it's a pleasure to work with labels like that. I’m very happy to be back on this legendary label.

We would also love to hear the story behind this EP and how it was to collaborate with UOIO on the last track of the EP.

As I mentioned, this year has been a bit complicated, "Uncontrolled Thoughts" is a tribute to all those thoughts, both good and bad, that have made me mature and grow as a person and as an artist, without a doubt it can be one of the EPs of I am the proudest of all that it means to me.

The collaboration with UOIO came after listening to their track and seeing that it had a lot of potential if certain things were polished, after several sessions working on it we finally found the result we wanted.

Did you ever think about creating a new duo or, since you’ve experienced working with another artist before, you prefer to make music solo?

To be honest, I don't think I will work as a duo with anyone again, although I am sure that several collaborations will come in the future.

Aside from electronic music, what genres do you listen the most?

I like almost all kinds of music, I listen to Queen, The Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, Michael Jackson, Spanish Hip Hop, old music... the only thing I can't stand is reggeaton haha.

Since I might be a food enthusiast (who isn’t?) and you’re from Spain, I need to know your favourite national dishes.

Great question! In fact I am a lover of food and cuisine too, in Spain we have so much variety that it would be impossible to choose just one dish, in my city fried fish is very good, in fact any type of fish since I live in a coastal area. If you go to Valencia obviously the paella, in Galicia the seafood and for example in the Basque country a good grilled meat. Iberico ham in different areas and of course, the Spanish potato omelette.

As you are a busy person, I’m sure you can’t live without coffee. On a daily basis, how many do you drink?

Although I’m a busy person and I love coffee, I try to not abuse it since I do not have very good sleep, so I don’t usually have more than two a day, one in the morning and another after eating haha.
