Coffee Break with Dari Dark

Dari Dark is a channel that transfers human emotions from our "real world" into the possibilities of a digital audio workstation.

Musical depth and functionality on the dancefloor are the two key factors of his creations.

By founding the Munich-based label Exit-Scam-Records, he offers talented artists from all over the world a platform to express themselves.

Hi Dari, it’s nice to have you here today.

First of all, we were wondering when and why you decided to start making music?

I was born in Munich, always drawn to drawing, playing instruments, and expressing myself in different ways. My first encounter with a DAW was at the age of 13, producing rap beats and writing lyrics. As an adult, life got harder, I had to earn money and I lost focus. After realizing that true happiness lies in doing what I love and standing for it, I returned to the studio. Music, a symbol of unity and freedom, became the path to a happy life through self-honesty and understanding of oneself and the surroundings.

How would you describe your workflow in the studio?

When I started to make music, I produced only in the box with Ableton Live. After a while I bought my first analog synth (a real cheap and small Volta-Keys from Korg). This was the starting point of my analog-addiction. It’s so much easier for me to record things live with analog gear and it’s much more fun for me than starring on the screen. I have big midi-interface from wich I send different midi-patterns to all my analog synths. After recording some takes, I’m looking for the best parts and put them together to an arrangement. During the whole creativity-process, I don’t waste time with mixing. Mixing is the last step in my production-process.

You are the founder of the record label Exit-Scam-Records. Why did you decide to create your own imprint and what would you like to achieve with it?

I founded Exit-Scam-Records to have a platform wich I can control independently. Engaging with artists and discussing art all day is enjoyable for me. Every release on my label is a trophy, something I'm proud of. It grants me the freedom to release whatever I like, whenever I want, without dependency on other labels. Additionally, the label aims to support and grow with local artists like Zare, Othertune, and Tofu & Acid, forming a platform for their music.

How would you describe your music to someone who is new to the dance music scene?

My music and the music of exit-scam-records, is all about melodic techno, but we lean more towards the dark and danceable side than the melancholic vibes. Plus, my sound is super organic, you know? Lots of movement in the sounds, really alive – all thanks to my analog synths.

What thoughts do you have about the future as a producer? What do you think about AI?

Art will endure, evolving with technological possibilities. AI is a powerful tool, but using it requires understanding and intention. While AI can create visuals, melodies, and handle mixing/mastering, the question remains: can it genuinely evoke emotions without possessing its own? The connection between humans is unique. A human being can only really identify with another human being and will never idolize a machine or see it as a role model. So in my opinion: Artists, you are safe!

You recently released your new EP 'A glitch in the Matrix.' What is the story behind that release?

‚A Glitch in the Matrix' is a collaboration with Othertune from Berlin. His music resonated with my style and the label's vibe. We connected, decided to collaborate, and experimented in the studio, combining our ideas. Othertune's experience and mixing skills led to the completion of the project, resulting in a 4-track EP. The support for this project has been overwhelming, and we're proud of the positive reception.

What are you working on at the moment?

Loads of stuff! Firstly, I'm diving deep into developing my sound. I'm all about the new tech and AI possibilities right now, experimenting with fresh tools to see how I can blend them into my workflow and push my sound forward.

Then there's our label events – been organizing those for about six months now, and they're a blast! Got some exciting gigs lined up, especially pumped about our next one in May, nestled in the Bavarian mountains.

And, of course, there's the label grind itself – always on the hunt for talented artists who vibe with our vision, working on placements, and keeping the music flowing. Plus, gotta keep the lights on, so I'm producing tracks for other artists too.

The gig you are most looking forward to this year?

Definitely our next Label Showcase. Can't wait to link up with all the artists and my crew, it’s gonna be epic!

Last but not least: how do you like your coffee?

My name is Dari Dark but when it comes to coffee, I'm a softie…Got to have it with milk and sugar.
